In January 2014, 28 partners from 8 countries kicked-off the AdaptIVe project. Lead by Volkswagen AG, the consortium will further applications for automated driving during three and a half years.

AdaptIVe develops various automated driving functions for daily traffic by dynamically adapting the level of automation to situation and driver status. Further, the project addresses legal issues that might impact successful market introduction.

Targets for Research and Development

  • Demonstrate automated driving in complex traffic environments. Test integrated applications in all possible scenarios taking into account the full range of automation levels.
  • Enhance the perception performance in complex scenarios by using advanced sensors supported by cooperative and communication technologies.
  • Provide guidelines for the implementation of cooperative controls involving both drivers and automation.
  • Define and validate specific evaluation methodologies.
  • Assess the impact of automated driving on European road transport.
  • Evaluate the legal framework with regards to existing implementation barriers.

Demonstrators

Among the eight demonstrators there are two classes of vehicles: passenger cars and one heavy load truck. Different types of passenger cars will be tested, ranging from city cars to larger passenger cars.

AdaptIVe research and development addresses four of six automation levels from the SAE scheme*: assisted, partial automation, conditional automation, high automation.

Results/Lessons Learnt

With 28 partners from all over Europe and 25 million euros budget, AdaptIVe is advancing the technical performance of automated driving systems for cars and trucks. taking automation to higher levels, the results of AdaptIVe support the goals of making driving safer and more comfortable and of reducing congestion and fuel consumption.

The project tests and develops applications for typical traffic scenarios on motorways, in urban environments and for close-distance manoeuvres, covering all levels of traffic complexity and speeds up to 130 km/h.

The functions offer assistance and automated driving at various levels, including partial, conditional and high automation. The minimum risk manoeuvre, whereby the vehicle safely pulls over to the side of the road and stops, is included in all scenarios.

To improve the perception of the traffic environment AdaptIVe will combine sensor data, maps and communication, based on ITS G5. Accordingly, AdaptIVe improves the interaction between driver and vehicle, increasing user acceptance of automated systems. Guidelines for how to design and implement the driver–vehicle interaction are provided to achieve collaborative automation.

The project also focuses on the legal aspects of automated driving: product liability, road traffic, regulatory law and data security are core concerns of the project. In addition, the project defines and validates specific evaluation methodologies, addressing both the technical functionalities and the impacts of automated driving applications. Insights will be provided for the safety and environmental benefits for European road transport.

To test and evaluate the AdaptIVe functions, the project builds up eight demonstrators – seven passenger cars and one truck.
